An honest-to-goodness, old-school, in-your-mailbox postcard. And guess what? She scanned the QR code. She bought the suitcase. She even bought the camera insert. Was she hunting for new luggage? Nope. But the message hit the mark—because she was the moose. Ruth immediately emailed all her own moose and shared this message: “This postcard was in my mailbox on Saturday morning. When I got it, I paid attention because it applied to me.
I clicked on the QR code…I bought it.
Was I looking for a new suitcase? No. The offer was compelling!
So, direct mail does work – when you send it to the RIGHT moose - according to Steve Miller who wrote the book Uncopyable – I had you read this book a few years ago for one of our annual meetings.
I am the right moose, the right target customer, for this postcard – I have no idea how they got my address – probably from Delta Diamond Medallion flyer list. There is a photography insert for the suitcase – which I also bought – which will make carrying my cameras and lenses much easier.

Who exactly is your moose, your target audience? Where do you find them? What are their hobbies – how do we tie plumbing, HVAC, electrical to their hobbies?

How can you make your message so relevant, so useful, so compelling—they don’t need to be looking to say yes? If you don’t know your moose, you’re just tossing marketing spaghetti at a wall and praying it sticks. But if you do know your moose?
